Eid was a very different experience this time. A kind of an aversion developed by the end of the festivities – towards meat, slaughter and blood!
To start with we had to do this recording for Atv (this was way before Eid by the way). The event was titled Meat
Milan Party and the tagline was Aao Meat Karein! … Now that’s repulsive!! All offence to Atv! …
At the same time, I am quite aware of where all this is coming from:
There is a kinky side to Lahori sense of humor where we twist a few letters around in a word to create another meaning out of it, while the word sounds the same. These guys made meat out of meet!!???
So basically they transliterated ‘Let’s Meet’ to ‘Aao Meet Karein’ and then added the Lahori kink to make it ‘Aao Meat Karein’. But if we reverse engineer the transliteration, it will become (in English), ‘Let’s Do Meat!’ … ahem…
Let’s move on … …
A day before Eid I was walking inside my residential compound and I came across a bunch of goats (if anyone want to shoot a morality bullet at me, especially about me not having my own goats, for sacrifice, then go ahead… I have my bullet proof vest on these days).
It’s funny how, right when I passed by these goats, they stared at me and starting bleating. Somehow, I too was quite perceptive at that moment and could sense a lot of pain in their eyes. They were staring at me is if I was their long lost savior or something. Their cries increased as I moved away…
I had to divert myself… … not that I would have pulled off a saving act – Ali Noor does that stuff … I just regret not doing it later
…
This staring and moaning happened all day into the night. The last call came from inside a locked garage as I was walking by. Even strange was the recollection, before going to bed, that these cries were more or less specifically towards me – as I had seen other people pass by the goats without getting a single call.
In bed I could see those eyes again, telling me:
… this is what you have come to … you feel this sense of pride that you are not me … that you are bigger, greater … I too was willing to accept that when you made the First Sacrifice … I respected you because you deserved the respect … today I stare at you as my equal, if not less … you can kill as many of me … but don’t you dare think that I will cover up for your wrongs … I don’t find you worth it anymore!
….
I slept at 10 a.m. on Eid day. Woke up at 1, got ready and went for lunch to my aunt’s place. I love her cooking… but she’s also grown old and now she has a whole platoon of kitchen workers (including her bahu’s)… so her own input has become more mental than physical… still it has always worked.
This time however, the food was too spicy! And even she confessed that this was a first time that they had to use a lot of spices to cook the meat properly, especially the liver… My cousin then made the remark: ‘Ab to Bakron ke bhi Jigar Kharab Honay Lagay!’
It might be a random chance event for any reasonable person; luck had it that we got a bad goat. But somehow the pieces were fitting in one after another…
I usually eat a lot at my aunt’s but I couldn’t digest the food (quite against my nature by the way as I am known to have a strong digestive system). I walked out. My eldest cousin followed suit and together we went for a long walk on the streets of Model Town.
Simultaneously, as if by coincidence, both of us started lamenting about the current state of affairs… and in that too, we went straight to the topic of religion, how it came about and how we ended up understanding of it…
I will skip through that discussion for now… maybe when I am 40 and far more educated on that front, and when people around me will be forced to become more open minded (forced because that’s where circumstances are taking us)… maybe then I will share all that openly…
For now, I will just conclude with the final piece in my Eid Puzzle…
On my way back from the walk, we passed by this house… where a good 50 or so people had queued up outside the gates. The gates were closed, yet we could see some six to eight cows hung on the porch ceiling. The driveway outside and the road across the gate were sticky, while the roadside was a blood swamp. The smell was intense – if I could give it (the smell) a feeling I would say it was painfully claustrophobic!
At once I remembered the scenes from Apocalypto; the human sacrifices taking place in front of thousands of onlookers, thirsty for blood … thirsty for deliverance!

You’re absolutely crazy, Hamz!
But I am amazed at how you described the last bit. And the picture is just so pertinent. Bravo!

Hmmm..
A very interesting post Hamza.
Though I have this weird yet a good feeling that this one is not just limited to one post only. The coming parts of ‘The Same Discussion or Related’ is expected from your end some how or the other.
My brother, I think life is just like a prism, everything reflects something to the other side or the other end…
Dont think much about those goats though, they were asking for the Savior, they were cursing you for not having one of their pals at your place…..

You don’t have to explain transliterations/puns/plays on words :\

I’ve read almost all your ‘notes’, questionable rants, however you may put it in words, not that this is all I do but this one reached out to me. Maybe not in the manner I expected it to.
You see, there are always certain situations, rules, boundaries, most of which, confusing. There was once a time when ‘not speaking your mind’ was playing it safe, a garunteed entry to the land of heaven. (Thank the Lord we all grew up!) But this, I do not believe is a question, or some sort of a confrontational tactic. Instead, it may just be a repressed feeling that you havnt understood the true meaning of to begin with. (I do mean that in the most polite way possible-I’m not calling you a man of ill faith either, especially since I do not consider myself to be ‘All-Knowing’).
Anyway, all I aim to declare is that when you put something down in ink.. try to deliver the message more perceptibly.. taking into account of course – the true origin of the idea you wish to rebel against!
All in all, its good to see the blood gets you thinking! Belated Eid wishes to everyone!

hey intriguing post…certainly a different perspective to a normative issue. However in a certain capacity I kind of disagree with you. Often I have thought that we have a very humanistic way of judging and treating other things disregarding the actual essence which they encapsulate. In other words human aesthetics are the most advanced of sensation and feeling where often things are blurred when we apply that benchmark down to treating things which do not have attributes and characteristics which are essentially humanistic.
Since inception of mankind from the period through which he lived in caves animals have fallen prey to their hungry and survival. However it has been a natural phenomenon that has become an acceptable norm of society but it must be admitted that their treatment has not been in a sanest manner possible. if u look towards west and see their slaughter houses you would be amazed at degree of torture and cruelty which is inflicted on animals in a society which advocates democracy and equality. However with advent of principles of religiosity particularly Islam that treatment has adopted a very sane and acceptable pattern.
So what I mean to put across through these paragraphs is that human aesthetics often seek refuge at different extreme polarized ends when enacting upon something like animal sacrifice. On one hand you would find those human right activists condemning any animal sacrifice propagating a vegetarian cult through celebrities. In various religions you would finds cows being held as divine object. So over here we are treating animals from eye and judgment that is essentially humanistic. You would have often seen millionaires naming their entire wealth in name of cats and dogs because over a certain degree of time their attachment have grown within such bounds that they have started to imply all attributes of humanistic behavior to poor animals that really don’t meet that advanced standard. On the other hand you find those slaughter houses I just mentioned that often have a barbaric mindset in treatment of animals. maybe it again stems out of humanistic experience where their previous histories were drenched in constant bloodshed and mayhem so inculcated within that aesthetic behavior which is primarily derived from human experience they judge treatment of animals that require a totally different ideology because they are a creed of different nature that have primarily different aesthetic implication in terms of the way they are. It is a natural phenomenon which we fail to appreciate and understand
Every component of nature has a distinct place in this world. Destinies of every being is engraved according to certain principles and patterns and though they might differ in terms of their individualistic essences but when it comes to categories under which they are stipulated they behave, act and work under parameters which nature has ascribed them. We often create these imbalances when we define and observe things the way they are not. Animals are bound to be sacrificial element (but in the way prescribed by religion because it being advanced form of philosophy truly understands different categories and how interaction and associations with them should be enacted by us) for humans because their destinies have a pathway that leads towards that purpose. At advanced level our purposes are much broader and vaguer than animals and that is why we essentially occupy space as human beings which often can’t get down to understanding less complicated essence that have a more condensed purpose and motive. I think I got a bit too long… not a philosophical treatise in any sense. Though I might write one once I reach that advanced form of learning….
PN. I am not putting links of videos of slaughter houses here but do check them on you tube and you would realize limits of humanistic frustration that is inflicted on animals.
